- Story Text: Saturday (July 20) at San Diego Comic Con brings out the best in cosplayers (costume players), who dress up as their favorite sci-fi and fantasy characters and parade around the convention center and the environs.
Some fans spend months preparing for the convention, trying to find the most effective way to dress up and survive the heat of the festival.
Dean Heezen, who had come to the convention dressed as Hades from Disney's 'Hercules', spoke to Reuters about why cosplay has become so popular at San Diego Comic Con, saying "It's just a good way to connect everyone together and just to appreciate everybody's fandom and it's a good way to just visually celebrate it as well."
Some of the outfits were extravagant with one man dressed as Ursula from 'The Little Mermaid' while others dressed as 8 foot tall Transformers.
However, cosplay has become a craft over the years with most people making their own costumes.
Todd Schmidt, who dressed as Hellboy and is a perennial cosplay at Comic Con, said "Do what you love. Number two: don't reach too far."
Kip Shiotani, who comes with his family every year, gave the following advice. "Don't wear anything hot. Don't wear a full mask. That's just death. Don't wear capes if you can avoid it. The coolest, smallest, lightest costume you can get would be the optimal here at San Diego," he said.
One of the most extravagant costumes was by Andie Jay. She dressed up as Jane Foster from Marvel Comics, who only 6 weeks ago became the winged Valkyrie. In the past 6 weeks, Jay has spent nearly all her time handcrafting a huge pair of wings.
"So the wings do electronically move in and out," she said. "I lost my handler who has the remote control so I don't know where he is right now and if I wanted to get out of here, I can't fit through doors so I'll just die inside the convention, but what a way to go," she added.
But it was just fantasy characters. Some people in San Diego came dressed as political figures trying to gain support for the upcoming presidential elections with one dressing as Beto O'Rourke and another dressed as Bernie Sanders.
