- Story Text:Stargazers traded the bright city lights for dark secluded areas in Bosnia to watch the Perseid meteor shower between Saturday evening and Tuesday morning (August 10 - 13).
Groups gathered across the country to enjoy the spectacle, which occurs every August when the Earth passes through the debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, discovered in 1862.
Keen stargazer Emir Mrahovic said he has been observing the beautiful phenomenon for years, as he sat with friends for a barbecue in Kozara National Park.
Meteors are parts of rock and dust that hit the Earth's atmosphere, heat up and glow. Most vaporise as they descend, but some explode.
The phenomenon is best viewed in the northern hemisphere in isolated areas where there is little light pollution from cities and traffic.
