- Summary: BEIJING, CHINA (AUGUST 26, 2019) (REUTERS) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN GENG SHUANG ARRIVING AT REGULAR BRIEFING JOURNALISTS SITTING (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "What I can tell you is that on economic and trade disputes between China and the United States, they should be resolved via dialogue and consultations. But the U.S. adding further tariffs on China seriously go against the consensus reached by the two countries' leaders at the Osaka (G20) summit and harms the interests of both sides, tramples on the rules of multilateral trade and threatens the security of global supply chains." JOURNALISTS SITTING (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "We hope that the United States can return to rationality as soon as possible, abandon their mistaken actions, and create conditions for talks on the basis of mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit." JOURNALISTS SITTING (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "I think the so-called idea of American companies leaving China seems more like a political slogan than a practical measure. Even if it happens in reality, naturally others will come in to fill in the gaps. Looking at it like this, the biggest loser would be the U.S." JOURNALISTS SITTING (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "So lastly I wish to stress that the decoupling of the Chinese and U.S. economies is absolutely not a positive direction for resolving the Sino-U.S. trade tensions, neither is it a way for the U.S. to resolve its own problems. So I'll say once again, when you decouple (your economy) from China's economy, you're decoupling (your economy) from opportunity, from the world and from the future. We urge the U.S. to listen more to different views and clearly work out the pros and cons, please think carefully and do not to let emotions sway their feelings." An increasingly bitter trade war between the world's two largest economies sharply escalated on Friday (August 23), with both sides levelling more tariffs on each other's exports. The trade war has damaged global growth and raised market fears that the world economy will tip into recession.
Speaking on the sidelines of a G7 summit in Biarritz on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping as a great leader and said the prospect of talks was a very positive development for the world.
