- Story Text: An Australian man jailed in Bulgaria after being convicted in 2009 of stabbing two Bulgarian men, killing one of them and wounding the other, was released from prison on Friday (September 20).
Paul 'Jock' Palfreeman was handed a 20-year sentence for the murder of 20-year-old law student Andrey Monov, son of well-known Bulgarian psychiatrist Hristo Monov, the former Deputy Director of the Bulgarian Child Protection Agency and for wounding Antoan Zahariev in December 2007.
Palfreeman claimed he intervened when he saw a group of people attack two homeless Roma, and pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
Palfreeman was escorted from Sofia prison a day after the Court of Appeal ruled that he should be released, having served 12 years of his sentence.
As he was leaving he thanked Dessislav Traikov, the prison's vice-chairman.
According to Bulgarian broadcaster NOVA TV, magistrates granted Palfreeman an early release for having served the majority of his sentence and for good behaviour during his detention.
