- Story Text: Over 180 migrants disembarked from the Ocean Viking rescue vessel on Tuesday (September 24) in the Sicilian port of Messina after five days at sea.
The 182 migrants, including a new-born, children and a pregnant woman, were picked up in different rescue operations by the rescue ship run by French charities Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS Méditerranée.
In a note, SOS Mediterranee expressed its relief and welcomed "the Italian decision which puts an end to five days of unnecessary suffering".
Interior ministers from five European Union countries said on Monday (September 23) they had agreed a new scheme to distribute migrants saved from the Mediterranean in a deal aimed at relieving the pressure on southern EU states.
The plan will be presented to interior ministers from all 28 EU nations on October 8, with officials anxious to sign up as many states as possible to the programme and resolve one of the most contentious issues the bloc has faced in recent years.
