- Story Text: Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden said on Tuesday (September 17) there was "no oath of secrecy" in his work, as he promoted his new book in Berlin.
Snowden, who in 2013 leaked secret documents about U.S. telephone and Internet surveillance, was speaking from an undisclosed location in Russia via live video link to an audience.
His remarks came as the United States filed a lawsuit against him, saying his book "Permanent Record" violates non-disclosure agreements. The U.S. Justice Department said Snowden published his memoir without submitting it to intelligence agencies for review, adding that speeches given by Snowden also violated non-disclosure agreements.
Snowden has lived in Russia since he revealed details of U.S. intelligence agencies' secret surveillance programs.
Though Snowden is viewed by some as a hero, U.S. authorities want him to stand in a criminal trial over his disclosures of classified information.
