- Story Text: Security was tight in Kabul on Sunday (September 29) as vote counting continued across the country.
Out of 9.67 million registered voters, only about one in five cast their ballot, according to an election commission official. Those who voted hoped that the voting had taken place without fraud and the vote counting would be fair, but the low turnout and complaints about the voting system heightened fears an unclear result could drive the war-torn country into further chaos. Taliban fighters attacked several polling stations across the country to try to derail the process, but intense security prevented the large-scale violence.
Preliminary results are not expected before October 10 and final results not until November 7. If no candidate gets over half the votes, a second round will be held between the two leading candidates.
