- Story Text: Mass clean-up efforts were underway across a main road on Hong Kong island on Wednesday (October 2) after protesters left a trail of destruction from anti-government rallies on Chinese National Day.
Protesters targeted China-affiliated businesses along their route. Two Bank of China ATM machines were set ablaze the previous night. A Starbucks was also heavily vandalised.
In the Tuesday (October 1) protest, a demonstrator was shot with a live round for the first time. Previously police used bean bags rounds and rubber bullets on the protesters, firing live rounds only in the air.
Police defended their action saying that the officer involved was under serious threat and acted in accordance with official guidelines. The man was conscious when taken to hospital, police added, but his condition was not immediately known on Wednesday.
