- Story Text: Turkish howitzers shelled targets in northern Syria on Tuesday (October 15) as Turkey further strengthened its military presence along the Syrian border against the Kurdish YPG militants.
Turkey says it aims to defeat the Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara sees as terrorists and an extension of its home-grown PKK militant group.
Turkey plans to create a "safe zone" where millions of Syrian refugees can be resettled.
The United Nations says 160,000 people have fled their homes as Turkish forces advance. The Kurdish administration puts the number of displaced at 270,000.
