- Story Text: Strasbourg's Christmas market opened on Friday (November 22) to the sound of accordion and the smell of mulled wine, nearly a year after a shooter killed five people in the heart of the historic city.
Strasbourg's traditional Christmas Market is the oldest in France when it started selling local delicacies four centuries ago. From mulled wine to Alsace patisseries, handmade decorations and Christmas presents, the market welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
But on December 11 last year, the festivities suddenly came to an end when a gunman randomly fired into the market crowd, sparking a two-day manhunt and ending with the attacker being shot dead by police.
This year, authorities have established security check points to access the market, with police and armed soldiers patrolling the area.
Alexandra Friess has been running her shop at this market for the past 21 years and for her, nothing's changed. "It's business as usual, it's the festive season and we put things behind us."
The market opens until December 30.
