December 2016 - The Syrian army and its allies defeat rebels in their biggest urban base of Aleppo after months of siege and bombardment, confirming Assad's growing momentum.
January 2017 - Russia, Iran and Turkey meet in Astana, Kazakhstan, in parallel with the faltering U.N. peace effort, to create "de-escalation zones" that fail to stop the fighting.
March 2017 - Israel acknowledges having conducted air strikes against Hezbollah in Syria, aiming to degrade the growing strength of Iran and its allies.
April 2017 - The United States launches a cruise missile attack on a Syrian government air base near Homs after a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun.
April 2017 - Suspected gas attack on Syria's rebel-held Idlib by pro-government planes.
July 2017 - The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Syrian army launch an offensive against an Islamic State enclave on the northeastern border with Syria.
October 2017 - U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led forces defeat Islamic State in Raqqa, the militant's self-proclaimed caliphate. That offensive, and a rival one by the Syrian army, drives the jihadist group from nearly all its land.
November - 2017 - Syrian army takes full control of Deir al-Zor.
December 2017 - President Vladimir Putin orders Russian forces in Syria to start withdrawing, saying that after a two-year military campaign, Moscow and Damascus had achieved their mission of destroying Islamic State.
January 2018 - Turkey launches an assault on northern Syria against Kurdish rebels controlling the area around Afrin. It seizes the town in March.
February 2018 - Pro-Assad forces step up their campaign in Eastern Ghouta. Hundreds of civilians are killed in the besieged enclave of satellite towns and rural areas on the outskirts of Damascus in one of the fiercest bombing campaigns of the seven-year-old civil war.
April 2018 - Supposed chemical attack in Douma by pro-Assad forces.
April 2018 - The Syrian army recaptures eastern Ghouta, before quickly retaking the other insurgent enclaves in central Syria, and then the rebels' southern bastion of Deraa in June.
August 2018 - Pro-government forces mobilise for a major assault against Idlib and adjacent areas.
September 2018 - The leaders of Turkey and Russia said on September 17 they had agreed to create a demilitarized buffer zone in Syria's Idlib province to separate Syrian government troops from rebel forces, with Turkish and Russian soldiers patrolling the zone to ensure it is respected.
December 2018 - President Donald Trump says the U.S. will begin a total withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, declaring Islamic State had been defeated. The decision leaves exposed the alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, which has been among the most effective against Islamic State but is under threat as Turkey weighs a new offensive in Syria.
