- Story Text:Final preparations were underway in the town of Taman across the Kerch Strait from Crimea as Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected on Monday (December 23) to officially open the bridge connecting the peninsula annexed from Ukraine.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, drawing sanctions and prompting a deterioration in ties with the West. Many in Russia saw the move as restoring Moscow's rule over a historically Russian region.
Built at a cost of 223 billion roubles ($3.60 billion), the bridge is the longest dual-purpose span in Europe. It was opened to cars in May 2018 with Putin driving an orange KAMAZ heavy-duty dump-truck.
Ukraine said the construction of the bridge showed cynical disregard for international law by Russia.
