- Story Text: A factory in Panchkula city of India's northern Haryana state is manufacturing shoes using organic raw materials and the company claims that the shoes are biodegradable and decompose in five years.
An official from the shoe manufacturing company said the concept behind the decomposable shoes is trying to aid the environment and the raw materials used come from plants.
"We have made shoes now which are having 82 percent bio content, which is plant-based. They are based on eucalyptus, they are based on sugarcane, they are based on castor beans. We are also working on converting the husk of rice or wheat to fiber," said Managing Director of the factory that manufactures biodegradable shoes, Indreshwar Singh Paul, on Saturday (December 28).
He added the world produced 24 billion pairs of shoes last year and it takes anywhere between 50-200 years for a normal shoe to decompose. Manufacturing shoes that decompose in 5 years, he said is an attempt to limit environmental damage, and it would widen its accounting for the costs of its air pollution, greenhouse gases, waste, land, and water use. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
