- Story Text: Thousands of Dutch swimmers braved near-freezing temperatures on Wednesday (January 1) to mark the start of the new year.
The traditional North Sea swim has been held in the seaside town of Scheveningen since the 1960s, when it began with just a handful of participants.
Italy, France, Germany and Sweden are among several countries among others that host traditional New Year swims.
