- Story Text:Fishermen in India's southern Tamil Nadu state on Friday (January 03) said they have decided to stop fishing activities for 10 days, owing to Sri Lankan navy's interference near the waters of the disputed Katchatheevu Island.
The fishermen also said strong winds and high tides in the last few days have also made it difficult to carry on with fishing.
Katchatheevu Island, off the eastern seaboard in the Bay of Bengal, is frequently visited by Indian fishermen who use it as a destination to dry their nets and catch fish.
Ceded to Sri Lanka by former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974, the uninhabited island of Katchatheevu remains a disputed territory between fishermen of the two neighbouring countries. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
