- Story Text: Times Square is an internationally known meeting spot, but for one couple, Myisha Rich and Erin Nelson, the site was personally significant enough they decided to get married at the New York landmark on Valentine's Day Friday (February 14).
Rich and Nelson used the famous spot as a meeting point during their five years of distance between Washington D.C., and Rhode Island.
"We met playing online on video games," bride Myisha Rich told reporters. "We met playing 'Call of Duty' online on PlayStation Network. And he saw me online on Facebook, after that, it was like, 'I'm gonna marry you.' And nine years later, here we are."
Their nuptials comprised the opening of the annual event, "Love is in the Air in Times Square," now going on its 12th year - featuring weddings, vow renewals and even some surprise proposals.
The event also featured a sculpture of mirrors beaming an image of a heart. Entitled, "Heart Squared," it was put together by MODU and the Eric Forman Studio. And wedding planning website, The Knot, also hosted a pop-up floral stand where pedestrians could make their own bouquets.
Adrian Lopez said he had planned his proposal for a month before dropping to one knee at around noon in Times Square to pop the question to his girlfriend of nine years, Claudia Sofia.
"Claudia, will you marry me?" blasted in red on a billboard behind Lopez as the couple embraced.
A very public ceremony is right for some, according to Tim Tompkins, the president of the Times Square Alliance and event organizer.
"Ultimately love is about what's going on between two people. But some people, that's a very private thing. And other people want to celebrate and share the love with the world."
Indeed, best man Jamil Skinner, a bootmaker from Rhode Island, said the big stage only added to the power of the moment.
Being in Times Square "amplifies it, ..., all the cameras, all the people and just all the lights and everything out here just makes it feel that much more great."
