- Story Text: Stars Ed Helms and Christina Applegate of the new "Vacation" shared the red carpet Monday night (July 27) at the film's premiere in Los Angeles with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, stars of the original iconic 1980's comedy.
Helms, who plays a grown up Rusty Griswold, though is quick to point out that this "Vacation" is a different trip.
"There are a lot of conceptual elements that overlap, but store wise and joke wise this ia a really new endeavor," said Helms, who added that he loved the original series of films. "The character of Rusty Griswold as an adult is brand new and it really felt like a a clean slate in a lot of ways."
Written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, "Vacation" sees the Griswolds hitting the road again. This time it's a grown up Rusty following in his father's footsteps with hopes of finding some much-needed family bonding. Rusty surprises his wife, Debbie, played by Christina Applegate, and their two sons with an adventurous cross-country trip back to America's "favorite family fun park," Walley World.
"We are not re-doing or rebooting or having the audacity to try an improve upon anything," said Applegate. "We are an entirely different people, like a distant cousin and we just want people to have an enjoyable ride. We want people to enjoy themselves."
Helms added though that the new "Vacation" also shares a similar trait with the original.
"Chemistry is always, I think, the most important thing," said Helms, in explaining why he thinks this film will resonate with generations of fans. "It comes down to whether or not you believe the relationship in the movie. Christina Applegate can have chemistry with like a hat rack. She is so brilliant and effortless that it was such and easy thing for us to find the dynamic. The kids are awesome actors and just fun to work with and we had a great time."
Rounding out the cast included Chris Hemsworth in the role of Stone Crandall, Rusty's irritatingly successful brother-in-law and Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase as Ellen and Clark Griswold from the classic "Vacation" comedies.
The new trip begins in theaters on July 29. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
