As Hungary steps up its effort to build a fence along its border, its southern neighbour Serbia is struggling to deal with a tide of illegal migrants from North Africa and the Middle East passing through the country en route to Western Europe.
Near the town of Subotica in northern Serbia, an abandoned brick factory has become a makeshift shelter used by hundreds of migrants exhausted by their arduous route via the Balkans, having already passed through Turkey, Greece and Macedonia.
Although basic amenities are scarce in the camp, many of the migrants are hopeful they will be able to continue by first reaching Hungary, a member of the EU and of the passport-free Schengen area, before travelling on to Western Europe.
"I will go to Hungary, after that to Austria, after that to Germany. Because I want to go to the university, maybe work. I want a good life," a migrant from Syria who wished to remain anonymous told Reuters.
According to Serbian authorities, some 61,000 illegal migrants have been registered in transit through Serbia this year, while Hungary has already started building a fence along its border with Serbia to stem the growing tide of illegal border crossings. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
