We grew up with Siamese cats and dogs, not Siamese dogs, but it was always a Shepherd or a Rottweiler or a Pinscher in the house and a Siamese cat so I'm buying this because I'm going to give him this book to deal with the psychology of telling a child the cat died. Because they don't know that the cat died. They just took him to the vet and they're going to get information today, so perfect book, perfect book." VARIOUS OF EXTERIOR OF "WHAT PET SHOULD I GET?" - Story Text: A new book by much-loved children's author Dr. Seuss hit stores on Tuesday (July 28), 24 years after his death.
"What Pet Should I Get?" was discovered in 2013 while the author's widow, Audrey Geisel, was cleaning out his office in their California home.
She and his long-time secretary discovered the manuscript among a box of papers and sketches that she had found and put aside after his death.
Publishers said it is expected to be followed by at least two other books based on material left by the prolific and award-winning author Theodor Geisel, who wrote under the pen-name Dr. Seuss and who died in 1991.
Customers at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in New York City grabbed copies of the book to read to their children and grandchildren later.
"The 19-year old Siamese cat died two days ago," Hugh Hunt said. "I'm buying this because I'm going to give him this book to deal with the psychology of telling a child the cat died. Because they don't know that the cat died. They just took him to the vet and they're going to get information today, so perfect book, perfect book."
"We're looking into raising our child multilingual and I thought Dr. Seuss books are a really good way to teach English because it rhymes and it sounds and I think already from a young age, because it rhymes it's more like a song or something instead of a book so I think it would be good and interesting," said Jolien Louwerse, who is due in December.
"I think it's really exciting that there's this book that no one knew about. My kids love his books and it's really exciting for them to get to read it," Ashley Ganz said.
Cathy Goldsmith, the author's former art director, has said "What Pet Should I Get?" was probably written between 1958 and 1962. It features the brother and sister characters introduced in the Dr. Seuss book "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish," which was published in 1960, and centers on their trip to a pet store to pick out a new friend.
Geisel wrote and illustrated more than 45 books, including "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," before his death at the age of 87. More than 650 million copies of his works have been sold worldwide.
