Korean War veterans visited the truce village of Panmunjom on Tuesday (July 28), which is located in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea.
Thirty six veterans from the United States, Canada and Colombia were invited to the Panmunjom tour after South Korea marked the 62nd armistice anniversary on Monday (July 27).
The armistice, signed on July 27 in 1953, halted fighting between U.S-led U.N forces backing South Korea, and Communist Chinese and North Korean troops.
However, it has never been converted into a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreans in a technical state of war.
The war veterans toured the area which is the symbol of the unfinished war they participated in sixty-two years ago.
"South Korea, and what they have accomplished since the end of the war, and I'm very glad to have been a part of the struggle for the South Koreans," said 85-year old war veteran, John Jenson, from British Columbia, Canada.
"Well, we came here and didn't really know much, 62 years ago. What we grew, feel a lot. We love this country and we love the North Koreans. We pray, we pray for them (South and North Koreas) to be reunited in peace, love and freedom," said 83-year-old war veteran Allan Eubank from Texas, in the United States.
Despite its name the DMZ is one of the most heavily militarized and fortified borders in the world.
North Korean state media on Monday (July 27) said that the armistice marked the defeat of the United States and protected the sovereignty of the communist country under founder Kim Il Sung.
The United Nations Command (UNC), led by U.S. forces, has about 30,000 troops on the Korean peninsula supporting South Korea's 650,000 soldiers. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
