  • Story Text:This coming Sunday (March 15) marks one year since the deadliest mass shooting in modern New Zealand history that claimed 51 lives and wounded dozens of people, as this video illustrates the timeline of events following the massacre.
    The 2019 attack carried out by a lone gunman suspected to be a white supremacist, took place across two mosques in the city of Christchurch and was targeted at Muslims attending Friday prayers.
    Australian Brenton Tarrant was armed with semi-automatic weapons and broadcast the attack live on social media platform Facebook, which the company said it removed after being alerted by police.
    Tarrant, 29, faces a total of 51 charges of murder and 40 of attempted murder, as well as engaging in a terrorist act - a first under New Zealand's terrorism suppression legislation introduced after the September 11 attacks in the United States.
    He has pleaded not guilty to all 92 charges against him.
    The trial was scheduled to begin on May 4, 2020, but High Court Justice Cameron Mander delayed the start until June 2 due to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
    New Zealand's worst peacetime killing shook the country to its core and prompted the government to quickly tighten gun laws.
