- Story Text:Greece will shut schools, universities, daycare centres and other educational establishments as of Wednesday for a two-week period to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the country's health minister said on Tuesday (March 10).
Greece has so far reported 89 confirmed cases of the infection, a relatively low toll for Europe, but no fatalities.
The country has already temporarily barred spectators from attending sporting events for two weeks and suspended all flights to and from northern Italy until March 23.
Public gatherings in three districts in the south-west of the country were banned after many cases were found there and people self-quarantined.
The events around the flame lighting ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics, which takes place in ancient Olympia in south-west Greece, were heavily scaled down.
The government has announced financial relief measures for companies in areas hit by the coronavirus. It will also increase the health ministry's budget by 15 million euros to cover increased payroll and intensive-care-related costs at hospitals, and is encouraging employers to consider work-from-home initiatives.
