- Story Text: Panama's government said 27 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the Central American country as of Thursday (March 12), a jump of 17 from a day before.
Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo also said Thursday that he would issue a state of emergency decree on Friday (March 13) to confront and mitigate the effects of the highly-contagious virus on the country's people.
Panama's government had already ordered the temporary closure of all schools, public and private, due to coronavirus concerns, on Wednesday (March 11).
Other Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Honduras and Peru, have also taken measures to close schools temporarily.
