- Story Text: U.S. rapper and actress Queen Latifah celebrates her 50th birthday on Wednesday (March 18).
Queen Latifah, born Dana Owens in Newark, New Jersey, rose to fame rapping about topics including domestic violence and relationships from 1988-1992.
In 1993 she released her Grammy award-winning song "U.N.I.T.Y", which addressed the disrespect of women and remains her highest charting single in the U.S.
After starring in a variety of acting roles, she was nominated for a best supporting actress Academy Award for her role in the 2002 big screen adaptation of "Chicago".
In 2012 Owens starred with country singer Dolly Parton in the film "Joyful Noise" and in 2016 won a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for her portrayal of blues singer Bessie Smith in "Bessie".
