- Story Text: Landmarks in Brazil and Mexico are usually teeming with people, but now due to the coronavirus outbreak, they stand virtually empty.
In Brazil, Copacabana, one of the most famous beaches in the world which millions of beachgoers visit every year is deserted as is Rio de Janeiro's Corcovado Mountain where the Christ the Redeemer statue is located.
On Saturday (April 11), Brazil's health ministry said 1,124 people had died as a result of the outbreak, with 20,727 confirmed cases.
Mexico City, one of the most populous cities in Latin America, with over 20 million people living in the capital and its surrounding metropolitan area, is at a standstill. Restaurants and the vibrant nightlife the city is known for is a thing of the past as is the notorious traffic jams. There are no pilgrims making their way to the Basilica of Guadalupe, one of the holiest Catholic sites in Latin America. There's no sign of the some 4 million people who visit the soaring Teotihuacan stone pyramids which were discovered by the ancient Aztecs around 1500 AD, not long before the arrival of Spanish explorers to Mexico.
Mexico reported 375 new cases on Saturday, bringing the country's total to 4,219 cases and 273 deaths, the health ministry said.
More than 1.6 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 106,259 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
