We are looking at the temperature starting to increase. We have to have different work schedules so we can give people some rest while they are out in the field as well. So, today looks like a good day. The weather looks a little better. Hopefully, we can have more time out in the field to do some protective booming and recovery efforts." So, obviously the people and the more equipment we can get out there, the better job that can be done. But, it's been a pretty impressive." - Story Text: Cleanup crews deploy out of the Unified Area Command's Venice Staging Area to try and remove oil and lay boom along Louisiana's coastline.
After two days of hampered cleanup efforts because of bad weather, crews tasked with removing oil and laying boom along southeastern Louisiana's coastline deployed out of the Unified Area Command's Venice Staging Area early Friday morning (June 4).
"Today looks like a good day. The weather looks a little better. Hopefully, we can have more time out in the field to do some protective booming and recovery efforts," United States Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Jason Tieman said.
78 boats loaded with boom, skimming drums and other cleanup supplies carried 360 workers out of the Port of Venice and headed to oil-covered marshes, sandbars, and waterways of Plaquemines Parish.
Their focus on Friday was to lay boom and remove oil in Barataria Bay, North Pass, and South Pass where oiling has been found.
"Obviously the people and the more equipment we can get out there, the better job that can be done. But, it's been a pretty impressive," Lieutenant Commander Tieman said about the cleanup effort.
About 1600 people work out of the Venice Staging Area, a number that has increased as oil has continued to pour into the Gulf of Mexico.
The spill has been flowing since April 20, when an explosion on the BP Deepwater Horizon rig sank the drilling platform and killed 11 workers. US government scientists estimate between 12,000-19,000 barrels of oil a day had been pouring into the Gulf of Mexico, creating a disaster about twice the size of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.
BP has lost more than a third of its market value, or about $67 billion USD since the crisis began. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
