- Story Text: A man alleged to be a close associate of one of Mexico's most powerful drug traffickers was presented to the media on Monday (November 8) after being arrested.
Authorities say that Manuel Fernandez Valencia, alias "La Puerca", is a main collaborator of notorious drug trafficker Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
Fernandez was arrested on Sunday (November 7) during a police operation in the city of Culiacan in the northern state of Sinaloa following a shootout that lasted almost 20 minutes.
Federal police spokesman, Ramon Pequeno, said authorities had been looking for Fernandez for a long time.
"Manuel Fernandez, alias "La Puerca" has had an arrest warrant on him for provisional arrest with the aim of extradition to the United States since September of 2009. He is a fugitive from the North American authorities, he has charges for crimes against health in a federal court in the state of Illinois for bringing in shipments of cocaine and heroine to the United States. Seven others were detained along with Manuel Fernandez," said Pequeno.
Guzman is that head of the powerful Sinaloa cartel and is considered one of the main players in a bloody turf war against his rivals that exploded in 2005.
Guzman is one of the most hunted men in Mexico and has been described by authorities as "almost untouchable".
More than 31,000 people have died in the Mexico's drug war since the end of 2006 when President Felipe Calderon took office and sent troops and police into the streets to fight drug trafficking. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
