- Story Text: Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Thursday (July 9) while on a visit to Jordan that regional rival Iran has not and will drive the Saudis crazy.
In response to a journalist, the Jubeir said the Saudis have enough power to interrupt what he called Iranian "sabotage".
"In regard to Iran, Iran has not driven us crazy and no one can drive us crazy. We are people who have a mind, we are wise, patient. We also have power, personal power, morale, economic and military powers. No-one can drive us crazy. If the Iranians want to do acts of sabotage in the region, it will not be at the expense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia works to stand against Iran's acts of sabotage in the region and the main example of this is the Kingdom's intervenion in supporting legitimacy in Yemen," he said.
Yemen's Shia Houthi militias have taken over much of the country with the help of army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The internationally recognised government fled the country as the Houthi-led forces advanced rapidly towards the southern city of Aden earlier this year following their capture of the capital Sanaa last year.
"Iran is a large, great neighbouring country to Saudi Arabia and Arab countries and has a deep-rooted history and civilization that we respect and we aspire to have the best bilateral relations with Iran but at the same time these relations have to be based on principles of respect and not intervening in the affairs of others," he added.
Iran and Saudi Arabia have both accused each other of meddling in other countries' affairs with Tehran influential in neighbouring Iraq and backing the Syrian government against a Sunni-led uprising and Riyadh backing the Syrian mainstream opposition against Assad as well as militarily crushing a Shia-led revolt against Sunni rule in Bahrain and bombing Shia Houthi militias in Yemen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
