- Story Text: An Italian coast guard vessel on Thursday (July 2) morning brought some 900 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean sea to a port in Reggio Calabria in the southern Calabria region.
According to local media reports some 147 women and 60 minors were among the group of migrants who could be seen disembarking the vessel in groups and lining up in port for standard health and identification checks.
The migrants were said to be in good health conditions. Three of the female migrants were pregnant, local media reported.
The migrants came from Morocco, Libya, Nigeria, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Syria, the Palestine and other countries in central Africa, local media said.
Migrant traffickers have exploited lawlessness in Libya to cram people onto unseaworthy boats, charging thousands of dollars for the perilous passage across the Mediterranean.
More than 135,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Europe by sea so far this year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
