Summary:On June 8 Gamal Abdul Nasser resigned as President of the United Arab Republic. On television he said he would assume entire responsibility for Egypt's grave set-back. Thousands of people, many in tears, thronged the streets of Egyptian cities, calling on him to remain in office. On June 10, accompanied by national rejoicings, Nasser said he would stay as leader.
