  • Story Text: About hundred young and leggy Russian girls, wearing high-heel shoes, entered the "Glamour" sprint race, in a bid to win rather a 100,000 rubles (around $4,000) shopping spree voucher than a gold medal on Saturday (July 19) in Moscow's Red Square.
    Muscovites and the visitors had a chance to enjoy the unusual process of preparation of "athletes" for the race with an emphasis on their the make-up and looks.
    Most of the participants regarded the third annual competition organized by popular magazine Glamour, as an opportunity to take part in a challenging and beautiful summer-time fun-show and to experience a glimpse of glamour posing for cameras.
    Entrants in the "Glamour High Heels" sprint race had to wear regulation high heels that were a minimum of nine centimetres, the height that some women struggle to walk in, some find it bearable and some comfortable enough to sprint in them.
    For Milena, a student from Moscow, the high-heel race was nothing more than a summer time fun.

    "Actually I have never participated in any contest or competition before and I decided that such an extreme event in summer is exactly what I need," said Milena smiling shortly before the race.
    For some young women, like Olga, the race offered a chance to participate in a extreme show and get a bit of adrenaline into her body.

    "I thought it would be great to test myself, to participate in this extreme show," said Olga.
    Fortunately, the organizers insured the competitors' health, as the girls were mostly busy with their looks, "athletes' outfit" and photographers.
    The organizers of the race, are convinced that the girls running in high-heel shoes have become a component of modern Moscow and contemporary times in general.

    "The girls wearing shoes on high heels running after something, after their goal, which might be anything, any beautiful object, a handsome man, possible career or anything else have become an image of our times. Young girls wearing high-heel hoes and running around is simply a component part of our city. The girls on heels running to parties, to work - is an image of our time and the style of modern life," said Gena Ystyan, one of the event organizers and editorial staff of the Glamour, just before the final race.
    The winner, Svetlana Martinova, looked likes a model on the podium with her voucher and presents in hands. She smiled happily, probably thinking about expensive Moscow shops and imagining herself spending the amount she won less than in 15 seconds.
