- Story Text: Twenty-four bulls charged through the streets of Huamantla on Saturday (August 22) chasing after dozens of Mexicans and tourists racing to stay a few steps ahead of the clattering hooves and threatening horns.
Thousands of people lined the streets as the bulls were let loose in a running of the bulls festival held since 1953 in Tlaxcala state, the cradle of Mexican bullfighting.
Reports were sketchy on the number injured, but the final tally was 13 people.
Despite the danger, many enjoyed the event and Antonio Hernandez noted the quality of the bulls was better this year.
"Three years ago there wasn't this class of bulls from the most prestigious cattle farm. They weren't brave and didn't have lineage. Now the organizers are working to present better bulls," he said.
Tourists joined the local residents. Dutch tourist Leon Simons said he couldn't resist the dare.
"I heard yesterday evening there was a bullfight, so I thought I have to be there because it's the one thing I want to do in my life once, so - and I did it," he said.
The festival has yet to achieve the status of Spain's San Fermin bull running, which was made famous by Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun also Rises", a semi-autogiographical account of an alcohol-fueled visit to the event by a group of squabbling British and American friends in the 1920s. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
