- Story Text: In 2014 when British boy band 'The Wanted' announced they were taking a break, group member Nathan Sykes was just 20-years-old and not ready to stop making music.
"I was like, hang on, I'm far too young. I've only just turned 22, I was like I am too young to stop doing what I love. So I was like, I'm just going to go back into the studio and make music," said Sykes who said going solo wasn't the goal and that he was always focused 100 percent on band.
Although he is now solo, the English singer says his nine piece band keeps him company on stage.
"I think because there is so many people on stage with me it's like, it's not like a lonely stage, do you know what I mean. So it's like, it's a very busy stage."
After five years of singing pop tunes Sykes is going in a new direction. The young singer worked with producers and songwriters Harmony Samuels, Babyface and Diane Warren to craft a new sound.
"It's like soulful pop. And there is a nice healthy balance between fun, lighthearted, kind of flirty, upbeat, kind of horn influenced tracks. And that kind of contrasts well with the sort of deeper kind of like soul of the album."
Sykes is part of an insurgence of British singers finding success outside of the UK and said he thinks there is enough room for everyone.
"I think it's a really good time for pop music, especially in Britain, we're having a really, really good minute. So I'm just really happy to be able to say I'm a part of this British movement that's happening."
And so far fans are supporting his efforts: "They were like, 'wow, this is like a lot better than I thought it would be.' I was like, 'that's a back handed compliment.' But I was like, 'what, did you not think I was capable of it?' They were like, 'no, if I'm honest.' I was like, 'oh, great, cheers guys.'"
Sykes first official single "Kiss Me Quick," will be released in the U.S. and Canada on June 9 and in the UK on June 28 and said he isn't going to tell people what to think of his new music.
"I just think people should listen to the music with an open mind because it is such a departure from the music I was doing before. So it's a lot more soulful than what I've done before, which is cool. So I think just listen with an open mind and just - I hope they like it."
Sykes will release his debut album this fall. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
