- Story Text: Thousands of teachers took to the streets of Lima on Wednesday (May 12) as part of a 24-hour strike to demand that the government reach an agreement with their union to settle a wage dispute.
Carrying signs that called for President Alan Garcia's ouster for corruption, the teachers peacefully marched to Congress to demand the wage increase which was on the books since 1991.
Teacher and leader of the Peruvian Workers in Education Union (SUTEP), Rene Ramirez told Reuters the government was irresponsible in paying the teachers.
"The teachers are in the streets demanding that the government pay the debt it has with all of the teachers in Peru," he said.
Peru's education ministry announced that teachers who joined the strike would be penalized with a decrease in their salaries. Classes were not cancelled because of the strike. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
