- Story Text: Australia has been given a period of 18 days to bid for the extradition of Bogdan Cuic, who was arrested in Serbia in connection with an execution-style murder in Brisbane.
"Now in 18 days, Australia as a state which requests [extradition] must send extradition papers or in the same time period must send an extension for the sending of the request for extradition. This extension period can be a maximum of 40 days from the date of [Cuic's] detention," said high court spokeswoman Ivana Karapandzic.
Cuic was arrested in Novi Sad on June 5 and is accused of murdering 22-year-old Jei "Jack" Lee who was shot at point blank range in the car park of a shopping centre in April 2012.
Cuic has, for the time being, refused legal assistance from the Australian consulate but is expected to consult his lawyer in the next couple of days.
"The high court in Novi Sad will decide about assumptions for extradition, but the final decision about whether [Cuic] would be extradited or not will be decided by the Ministry of Justice," said Karapandzic.
Cuic, who lived with his grandparents in Brisbane's western suburbs, went overseas the day after Lee's murder.
His BMW was later found abandoned near a river.
