- Story Text: More than a hundred couples kiss side-by-side inside Taipei Stadium as they sway to the beat of slow music. However this is not a high school prom but rather a kissing competition at a group wedding staged by Tapei's city government on Sunday (October 14).
Since 1973, the city has hosted group weddings to discourage extravagant spending on traditional weddings and to promote stable family structure.
Originally scheduled for October 7, the city postponed the event one week because of typhoon Krosa which swept over Taipei last weekend. The postponement reduced the number of wedding couples from 232 to 129 as some of them are already on their way to their honeymoon.
To many of these couples, the more's the merrier when sharing their big day in group fashion.
"So many people getting married at the same time, it feels quite joyful. Typically when you're at a wedding banquet in a restaurant, you see at most two or three couples on the same day," says a bridegroom, Mr.
Wang.
Although it may seem like an eternity to wait for their turn on the red carpet, many couples say it gives them a memory worth cherishing forever.
"I've always wanted to attend a wedding like this because it is simple and solemn," says one bride, Ms. Hsu.
The age of the participants range from 19 to 65, all tying the knot in an ice rink stadium showered with rose petals and blessings from hundreds of witnesses. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
