- Story Text: Actor and comedian Jim Carrey pulled out all the whistle stops at New York's Grand Central Station on Friday (October 30) to promote his latest film, 'A Christmas Carol'.
Sporting a big bushy beard in preparation for another film project, the actor kept the crowd entertained by jumping into character - a frustrated early morning commuter.
"It's so good to be here.. thank you New York City, Grand Central Station! (applause) I'm trying to get my connection," Carrey joked.
The actor, best known for his roles in 'Ace Ventura', 'Liar Liar', 'The Mask' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', was in New York to wrap up Disney's 'A Christmas Carol' Train Tour, ahead of the film's release.
Carrey plays 'Ebeneezer Scrooge' in the 3D motion picture, which is directed by Robert Zemeckis.
"Scrooge was the first corporate scumbag (laughter) and so I think this is not only going to help you express the darker side of your personality, but it will put you in the right place and I think you'll really love it. I think it's the best Christmas Carol that's ever been made thanks to Robert Zemeckis," Carrey told the crowd.
The actor kept the laughs coming by running around with a giant pair of scissors, and before stuffing a bunch of streamers into his mouth.
Zemeckis, the Oscar-winning director behind 'Forrest Gump' and the 'Back to the Future' trilogy, says Carrey was a natural choice to play the miserable Ebeneezer Scrooge.
"I decided that Jim was perfect for Scrooge, he was always my first choice. He's a great character actor, he's a great dramatic actor, he's a great comedian, a great comedy actor and what's great about Jim is when he performs he uses every muscle in his body - his fingers, his toes, everything. So for this form that we're working in he's a perfect actor for creating characters," Zemeckis told Reuters.
The film, based on Charles Dickens' beloved classic, tells the story of the miserable Scrooge who begins the Christmas holiday season with his usual contempt.
But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey, Scrooge is forced to face old truths and must undo years of ill-will before it's too late.
"We all can relate to it. We all love a redemption story and that's what A Christmas Carol is at its heart - the idea that anyone can change their life if they're still living. I also think we all love Scrooge because in different degrees we all have a little bit of Scrooge in us in some way, so we really relate to him," Zemeckis says.
