- Story Text: A gun battle broke out in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Friday (October 14) between 20 to 50 armed supporters of deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi and forces of the National Transitional Council (NTC).
NTC fighters in pick-up trucks raced towards the scene in the Abu Salim neighbourhood, a centre of support for Gaddafi. The two sides exchanged automatic and heavy machine-gun fire.
NTC fighters threatened an arrested Gaddafi loyalist with guns and knives and kicked and slapped him as he was dragged away. Local residents said the group of armed men had appeared in Abu Salim earlier and had begun chanting pro-Gaddafi slogans.
"A group of Muammar's troops went through the Abu Salim area and started attacking from above the buildings where protesters were holding green flags and pictures of Muammar," an NTC fighter told Reuters Television.
NTC fighters said fighting had also broken out in the nearby Hadhba neighbourhood. One NTC fighter said Gaddafi told his supporters in a message on Thursday (October 13) night to rise up after Friday prayers.
Gaddafi has released a number of audio recordings calling on loyalists to fight the new government which ousted him from power when its forces captured Tripoli two months ago. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
