- Story Text: From the gaping wounds of Iraq to the joy of childhood and the ecstasy of lovers' reunion, Iraqi artist Mohammad Ghani showcases the rich history of Iraq and personal experiences in his latest exhibition in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The gallery at the Amman Cairo Bank is displaying a variety of sculptures by the renowned Iraqi artist who has attracted scores of art lovers in Jordan.
Mohammad Ghani is seen by peers as a pioneer artist who contributed to the vision of modern art in Iraq and the Levant, tapping into the rich history of his homeland.
"Of course Iraq is historic. Its civilization taught humans first to sculpt and the alphabets. Mohammad Ghani learnt from his heritage and introduced through his work a portrait of Iraq's history, the movement of civilisation in Iraq throughout thousands of years,'' said the exhibit's curator Mohammad Jaloos.
Ghani is considered an experimentalist, who has long captivated audiences with his chiselled masterpieces that have filled Iraq's public places and corners of museums.
A major part of Ghani's exhibition reflects the plight of Iraqis who experienced the war and tragedies that unfolded over the past seven years, following the U.S-led invasion of the country.
"The exhibition looks in some parts decorative due to the human elements, but some works are about the war in Iraq, the explosions in Iraq were also part of the theme," said Iraqi artist Ebrahim al Abdali.
Mohammad Ghani, who collaborated with the Iraqi artists Jawad Saleem on the erection of the iconic Freedom Statue in central Baghdad, has an artistic legacy that spans over half a century.
Born in Baghdad in 1929, the multi-award winner Ghani studied fine arts in Iraq and Italy.
His work has featured in museums and exhibitions around the world.
While his work in the Jordanian capital is attracting scores of art lovers who come to admire his creations, the artist himself is unwell and awaiting surgery. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
