- Story Text: A doctor at a field hospital near Misrata said at least seven rebels were killed and 22 injured during heavy fighting on Sunday (June 19).
Rebels from the city of Misrata, about 200 km (130 miles) east of Tripoli, have been trying to push west towards the Libyan capital but on Sunday they took heavy casualties when they came under fire from pro-Gaddafi forces.
A procession of pick-up trucks turned up at the field hospital carrying the wounded and the dead, some of them covered up with blankets.
A doctor said the rebels had come under attack in the early hours of the morning.
"Actually, about five or six o'clock early morning, Gaddafi's army started to have a force on our thawar (rebels) and suddenly at seven o'clock, a gush of cases were brought in. Two, three, about four people were directly brought, dead, the others are from minor to major injuries. And followed until now, which is about 11 o'clock, total injures about 22 injuries, and seven deaths," said Dr. Mohammed Berah.
The rebels, who have been trying to reach the government-controlled town of Zlitan, returned fire from multiple rocket launchers.
After four months of civil war, rebels control the eastern third of Libya, the Mediterranean port city of Misrata and much of the Western Mountains region stretching to the border with Tunisia.
But they remain far from seizing their ultimate prize -- Gaddafi's powerbase of Tripoli and its hinterland -- despite air support from NATO. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
