- Story Text: Tobey Maguire's performance as a soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder in "Brothers" earned him a Golden Globes nomination on Monday (December 15).
It's the actor's the first nomination and was, he said, a total surprise.
"It was a very exciting moment, I was really surprised, I had no expectations of that at all, and so I was surprised, and of course, it's a thrill."
But more important to Maguire than the accolades heaped on him is a desire that the publicity garnered from his nomination will lead to a larger awareness about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). "One of my hopes in doing this movie was to bring some more attention, get people thinking about it, hopefully talking about it, for us as a society, to take responsibility and reach our hand out to the troops, because their sacrifice is so great."
In the film, Maguire's heroic soldier is left for dead in Afghanistan but is later found to be alive and to have been held hostage under unduly cruel conditions. A return to his family stateside triggers hist PTSD.
Competing against Maguire for best drama actor are Jeff Bridges playing a country singer in "Crazy Heart," Colin Firth as a grieving man in "A Single Man," and Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in "Invictus."
"Brothers," directed by Jim Sheridan, also stars Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
