- Story Text: Chile's Supreme Court announced on Monday (May 18) that it had authorized an extradition request from France for a citizen suspected of killing his former Japanese girlfriend in the European country.
French prosecutors requested the extradition of Nicolas Zepeda, the alleged former boyfriend of Japanese national Narumi Kurosaki. Prosecutors accuse Zepeda of involvement in the disappearance of the then 21-year-old Kurosaki in the French city of Basancon in 2016. Her body was later discovered.
According to local media, Zepeda had met Kurosaki when he was an exchange student in France.
Although Chile does not have an extradition treaty with France, the court said it used the principles of international law to make its decision in favour of extradition.
Zepeda's defence argued that French authorities do not have sufficient proof to charge him with murder.
