- Story Text:California Governor Gavin Newsom hosted an online roundtable discussion with gym owners and instructors on Wednesday (May 27), telling them he hopes to have guidelines for reopening gyms "within a week or so".
He gathered together the representatives of the fitness industry in California to discuss their own ideas of what reopening might look like.
One gym owner made an emotional plea to Newsom.
Adam Attia, who owns the Fitness Rangers gym in the governor's city of Sacramento, was allowed to reopen his gym last week through guidance by local health officials, only to have to it shut down by state authorities.
Attia said "I cannot afford to wait much longer than a week at this stage. We are literally gasping for air. We have the protocols, we are safe. I know that a lot of my friends in this community that have helped these protocols are right in the same situation that I'm in and, governor, we need your help. We need to do this very soon. I guarantee people will be safe, they will feel safe and we will make sure that they are safe."
There were suggestions by instructors and owners about possible new protocols, including designated shoes for indoor gyms to working with schools and parks to find spaces for outdoor classes.
Ann O'Leary, Chief of Staff for Governor Newsom, told participants the guidelines are almost ready to be released to the public. She said, "We expect it to get out very soon. That will then allow the counties that have been able to move forward with what we call their self-attestation, which is to say they have been able to show stabilization in their communities and preparedness in their communities. They will then be able to use those guidance to be able to move forward. We're very hopeful that that is going to happen within a week and I think will be helpful for many of you."
