I would made an effort to test intensively and constantly, seven days a week in vulnerable suburbs because it is clear that (virus infection rates) over there in Argentina have changed little (with quarantine)." I think that it won't be just 14 days (restricted access to suburb) because there are many people who are infected. That's because people here did not look after themselves, they did not respect quarantine. Social isolation was not respected, they didn't use facemasks, they didn't follow anything (recommendations)." Argentina has marked its 500th coronavirus death this week, as the South American country grapples with flattening its infection curve for new cases.
With nearly 14,000 confirmed cases as of Thursday (March 28), this week authorities restricted movement at the Villa Azul on the outskirts of Buenos Aires amid a reported surge in local infections. Some 5,000 residents in the area have been ordered to go into strict lockdown for 15 days.
But speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Deputy Health Minister Carla Vizotti claimed new cases are stabilising.
Still, preparations were underway for an influx of patients as field hospitals were set up and beds rolled in. An isolation centre has been set up in Buenos Aires for infected patients to ride out the virus.
Argentina has imposed one of the toughest travel bans in the world, banning all international and domestic passenger flights until August 31.
