- Story Text:Russian Tall Ship Kruzenshtern returned on Wednesday (June 3) to the Baltic port of Kaliningrad after almost half a year at sea.
According to the Russian media, Kruzenshtern visited four countries in this time. Due to the coronavirus pandemic which spread globally while the ship was sailing, there was no chance to visit the ports for the crew and students of navy universities.
The Tall Ship "Krusenstern," formerly the "Padua" is one of the oldest and tallest four-masted sailing ships in the world and was welcomed with aplomb in her former home port.
Built in 1926 in Germany the ship sailed 15 long journeys between Australia and Chile, the fastest of which was between 1938-1939 during a record-breaking return trip from Hamburg via Chile to Australia.
It took 8 months and 23 days.
In 1946 the ship was transferred to the Soviet Navy as part of the war reparations and was renamed 'Krusenstern'.
The new name was chosen in the honour of Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770-1846), born in Hagudi, Estonia, who in 1803-1806, led the first Russian circumnavigation with the ships Nadezda and Neva.
Russia reported 8,536 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday. This brings its nationwide tally to 432,277 - the third highest in the world.
