- Story Text: Cuba offered a glimmer of hope on Monday (June 8) when doctors announced that the country had surpassed nine days with no COVID-19 deaths.
With a population of 11.2 million, the island has so far registered 2,200 people diagnosed with coronavirus and 83 deaths.
Cubans were in the streets wearing face masks on Monday.
Resident Marina Rodriguez said Cuba had risen to the challenge.
"We see once again that despite having the difficulties we are going through, our country has always managed to control the epidemic and has achieved figures that are reasonable relative to the rest of the continent. And, despite not being developed countries, good control of the pandemic has been achieved."
The death rate from COVID-19 has continued to drop in recent weeks. Epidemiologist Dr. Francisco Duran said this was largely due to early detection and screening.
The majority of Cuba's deaths were elderly patients with diabetes or hypertension. The mortality rate stands at 3.77 percent. Eleven of the country's 16 provinces have not reported any positive cases in recent weeks.
