- Story Text: Authorities in India's southern city of Chennai reimposed a citywide lockdown on Friday (June 19) as coronavirus cases continued to spike.
Police have set up 288 checkpoints around the city of 15 million residents, local media reported. Police said they plan to use drones for monitoring residents and make important announcements.
The state of Tamil Nadu had 52,334 total cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, the second highest in India. Chennai alone reported new 1373 cases on Thursday (June 18).
Authorities have said that the lockdown in Chennai and three other districts of Tamil Nadu will remain in place until at least June 30.
After a two-and-half month lockdown, India is now facing a major second wave of coronavirus cases. As of Friday, it had a total of 380,532 cases, health authorities said. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
