- Story Text: Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin Wall in Moscow on Monday (June 22), marking the 79th anniversary of the Nazi German invasion of the Soviet Union.
During the event, Putin greeted veterans of the war, who had been quarantined for two weeks prior to meeting the Russian leader to prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus, the Kremlin said last week.
Earlier on Monday, Putin visited a huge new Orthodox Christian cathedral dedicated to the Russian armed forces.
The events are taking place in the run up to a large-scale military parade on Red Square on Thursday (June 24) marking the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two.
The parade was originally scheduled for May 9 but was postponed until June 22 due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
June 22 is known as the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow in Russia.
