- Story Text:A massive landslide in India's northeastern Manipur state, near the capital city of Imphal, cut off villages in Noneh district, on Sunday (June 21).
A 100-metre-long section caved on Imphal-Jiribam highway, following heavy downpour on Saturday (June 20) night. The highway is known to be the lifeline of Manipur state and its damage virtually cut-off the northeastern state's supply line.
At least 200 vehicles loaded with essential items were stranded on either side of the landslide.
Officials said illegal quarrying in the area, leading to piling up of stones without any room for drainage led to the landslide. India's National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is trying to restore movement by clearing debris and cutting the hills to make a new road.
The local administration has warned of more landslides with the intensifying of monsoon. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
