- Story Text: Chaos reigned on Wednesday (July 1) in Lima after Peru's government began a new phase to reopen the economy after more than 100 days of strict quarantine.
On the first day of lockdown easing, hundreds of street vendors crowded into Lima's downtown, as traffic jam invaded main avenues.
Martin Vizcarra's government said mining activities, industries and trade will resume in the third phase of lockdown easing, complying with health protocols to prevent an outbreak of the pandemic.
Peru's government has lifted the quarantine on 18 of the 25 regions of the country, but keeps the borders, nightclubs and bars closed.
The rate of daily infections has fallen by less than half in the last week, but health experts fear a resurgence amid a hospital crisis.
So far Peru has reported 285,477 cases of the novel coronavirus and 9,860 deaths, according to Peruvian Health Ministry.
